Orange Tip Butterfly on Ranunculus flower (21st May 2009)I'm particularly interested in taking a sustainable approach - encouraging wildlife through the choice of plants; relating gardens to their surroundings; using rain-porous surfaces where practicable; working with the site conditions rather than fighting them. Always aiming to combine practicality with beauty.

The design process is generally as follows:

  • VISIT - to you and your garden to establish your needs;
  • QUOTE - to redesign the garden;
  • SURVEY - of the garden: key features, aspect, soil type etc.
  • DRAFT & CONSULT - on preliminary ideas and layout;
  • FINALISE - plans fully drawn up.

Design plans are to scale, hand-drawn and usually colour. Typically I might produce:

  • a layout plan with at least a minimal amount of planting information;
  • plus a perspective and/or elevation view,
  • and a section diagram if it might be useful.

Notes can accompany the drawings:

  • plants (latin name, common name & key characteristics) considered suitable for the garden conditions;
  • a suggested schedule of tasks to create the garden (useful if you’re doing the work yourself);
  • an estimate, based on my own costs, to build and plant the new garden; hard landscaping work may be contracted to a reputable builder - I do not employ anyone directly (fewer overheads that way!) so you get competitive quotes from craftsmen I can recommend.
